Security
You may need your system administrator's approval before downloading and installing a new software program. Your IT security officer may also need to approve. Please advise your IT security officer (and any other members of your IT or CIO staff who might need to know) that this application was designed for use by the U.S. Government and U.S. Government contractors. It complies with the Defense Information Systems Agency's "Application Security Checklist," Version 2, dated 19 August 2005. It has no “mobile code” (such as JAVA applets), no Active X controls, and does not make any changes in the registry when installed on your system. The software has been reviewed and found to be virus-free and contains no “Trojan horse” code, no “spyware,” or any other similar harmful programming code.
Selecting the Right Download Package
There are two different download packages, and you need to consult your system administrator or webmaster to determine which fits your particular organization's needs. If you will use ABS only in a client-server environment (not via the Internet or an intranet), no choice is necessary. However, if it is to be used in a web-based environment (via the Internet or an intranet), you will need to determine which "scripting language" is supported by your organization.
A scripting language is used in a web environment for two-way communication between your web server and the respondents who answer your quiz questions. It is needed to tell both you and the respondent whether the respondent's answers are right or wrong.
Different web servers support different scripting languages. The ABS version with the Microsoft Active Server Page (ASP) scripting language has been fully tested and is being widely used. If your organization does not support the ASP but does support the Perl scripting language, please contact the ABS project manager to obtain a Perl beta version for testing.
Download Instructions
Create an empty folder in which you will save the ABS download package. Click on the ABSInstall.zip link below. This will open a WinZip dialog box. Click on Extract or follow directions for unzipping and extracting the files. Save these files in the folder that you created for this purpose.

Perl: Contact the Project Manager to obtain a Perl version fortesting.

Installation Instructions
If your organization's security procedures require that new programs can only be installed by the system administrator, ask this person to handle the installation process. The folder that you created and where you saved the download package will have eight files and one folder. Clicking on the setup.exe file initiates an automatic installation program. Clicking your way through this installation program unzips the ABS files, installs them on your computer, adds new menu items to your program menu, and adds ABS Developer and ABS Presentation Program icons on your computer desktop. It also creates an ABSWeb folder on your hard drive containing the web pages. Clicking on the Developer Program icon (an American flag) on your desktop opens the ABS program.
Note: If you have a previous version of ABS, version 1.3 or more recent, you do not need to uninstall it. The new version will install over the old version and replace only the changed files. Any briefings you have developed and records of the respondents who completed these briefings will not be affected.
Minimum System Requirements
To install and run the ABS Developer Program, you should have the following:
- Windows 95 or higher
- For best web viewing results, Windows Internet Explorer 4.x or Netscape Navigator 4.x or higher.
- 5 megabytes of free disk space
- 32-bit ODBC driver (typically pre-installed on newer computers)
- Super VGA monitor
- minimum of thousands of colors
- minimum screen area of 800 x 600 pixels
